Lucasfilm Games opens Star Wars to a greater galaxy

Lucasfilm Games’ is teaming up with Ubisoft to create a story-driven, open-world Star Wars game. The developers of The Division, Ubisoft Massive, will develop this new game.

This will the first time that a company outside of EA has produced a Star Wars game in 8 years. EA’s eight years of exclusivity are over.

In addition, this could mark the start of a “long-term collaboration” with Disney as hinted by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.

The CEO made this statement to Wired: “We are excited to have our Ubisoft Massive studio working closely with Lucasfilm Games to create an original Star Wars adventure that is different from anything that has been done before.”

Like all games, TV series, books, film and comics in the franchise, the upcoming game will be canon. Not much has been reported on the details of the gameplay, storyline or the game in general. However, we do know that it will be directed by The Division 2‘s Julian Gerighty and will use Ubisoft Massive’s Snowdrop engine.

Future of Lucasfilm and Star Wars

EA will still continue making Star Wars games for the brand. EA CEO, Andrew Wilson, confirmed last year that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be the start of a franchise. Lego fans will also get a new game to add to their collection. TT Games said that Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, will be released this year.

But this new announcement also means that other companies may be able to pitch new games about any Lucasfilm property. Bethesda is currently working with Lucasfilm Games to create an Indiana Jones game.

This will be their first non-Star Wars AAA game in several years.

This news comes after another announcement by Lucasfilm that all Star Wars games will now be under a single banner, Lucasfilm Games. This is actually a return to the companies previous name. It was rebranded from Lucasfilm Games to LucasArts in 1990.
