Football players and fans have the SuperBowl. Actors and film critics have the Oscars. Gamers? the seventh iteration of the Game Awards went live.
With Geoff Keighley as the host, the event was filled with announcements and tough competition for many of the awards. The event also featured a couple of famous faces as presenters. Everyone knows Keanu Reeves, right?
Superhero actors Brie Larson, Gal Gadot and Tom Holland were all in attendance of the event as presenters alongside YouTube star Jacksepticeye and the Muppets Swedish Chef. We even had Vin Diesel appear in a game. The Fast and Furious star surprised everyone by appearing in the sequel to Ark: Survival Evolved.
Awards
The big award of the night would obviously be the Game of the Year. After a tough competition featuring Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Ghost of Tsushima, the Last of Us Part II was crowned the winner. Naughty Dog also scooped up 5 more awards including best game direction, best narrative, best action/adventure. Fortunately, Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy 7 Remake both won awards in other categories.
The developers behind the viral game Among us, Innersloth, bagged two awards beating Animal Crossing, Call of Duty and Fall Guys in the best multiplayer game award. The indie survival horror game, Phasmophobia, won the prize for best debut indie game.
Announcements
Besides the awards, there were several announcements to add to the chaos of Disney’s investor day. Microsoft’s the Initiative is bringing back Perfect Dark after 15 years. This will be the first game to come from Microsoft’s Santa Monica-based studio. Perfect Dark isn’t the only game series making a comeback. Back 4 Blood is the successor to the Left 4 Dead series. The game is due to arrive in the Summer of 2021. In addition, Bioware surprised fans with a trailer of a new Mass Effect game.
Nintendo is adding another character from Final Fantasy 7 to their roster of fighters. Sephiroth will be a playable character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate later this month. Finally, Fortnite is getting big crossovers. Daryl Dixon and Michonne from AMC’s The Walking Dead TV series will join the game along with Master Chief from Halo.
